Starfleet Criminal Investigative Services mission is to investigate and defeat criminal, terrorist, and foreign intelligence threats to the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet, its personnel and families and all its holdings all across the Galaxy.
Types of crimes investigated by SCIS include child physical and sexual abuse, burglary and robbery, theft of government and personal property, and homicide. SCIS also has responsibility for investigating any non-combat death involving a Starfleet service member where the cause of death cannot be medically attributable to disease or natural causes.
SCIS operates from over 165 locations, with offices in 25 different sectors. CIS is often the first law enforcement agency on the scene when UFP interests are affected. Serving at major Starfleet commands around the galaxy, SCIS special agents also deploy as agents afloat aboard all Starfleet Vessels. SCIS agents routinely conduct advances before UFP ships visit non-Federation port, working with domestic and foreign counterparts to identify and mitigate security threats. SCIS also conducts protective service operations for senior Starfleet and Federation officials and visiting dignitaries.
